Definitions
Double Standard
- Sexual Double Standard: "a condition in which men are allowed to behave more sexually promiscuous, whereas women are only permitted to engage and lead a monogamous life style" (Herold and Milhausen, 1999).
- Sexual Double Standard: "men have experienced more sexual freedom than women throughout the ages, and th society tolerates certain sexual behaviors from men and not from women" (Gentry, 1998).
- Double Standard: "a set of principles permitting greater opportunity or liberty to one than to another, especially the granting of greater sexual freedom to men than women" (urban dictionary)
- Double Standard: "a concept that permits and excuses certain behaviors and actions from one group but violently opposes the same actions from another" (urban dictionary)
Understanding Gender:
- Gender: "refers to the attitudes, feelings and behaviors that a given culture associates with a person's biological sex" (American Psychological Association)
- Gender stereotypes: an assumption or overgeneralization of how male and females are supposed to act based on the socially constructed gender roles that are embedded in us at a young age and constantly being reinforced.
- Gender roles/norms: "the behaviors society associates with the two dominant genders, male and female" (glossary on class blog)
One of your friends is known for being sexually promiscuous..... how people will judge your friend depends solely on one factor: GENDER!
If your friend is a man he is referred to as:
- Casanova: a label for men who are praised for being sexually promiscuous; "a man who is amorously and gallantly attentive to women and any man noted for his amorous adventures" (Free Online Dictionary)
- Stud: another common label for men who are praised for being sexually promiscuous; a man who is looked up to because he fulfills the traditional male stereotype of being dominant because of his sexual relations with women and is thus "popular" with his peers.
- Slut: a derogatory name to describe someone who is seen as promiscuous; is based on the notion that this individual sleeps with more people then society deems acceptable; usually used to describe females.
- Whore: "a promiscuous or immoral women" (merriam-webster)
